Driving School Highlights Safety Concerns Over Men Dancing on Moving Jeepney in Metro Manila
A video capturing three men engaging in risky behavior on a moving jeepney in Metro Manila has drawn significant public attention, prompting a driving school to question current police enforcement and passenger safety protocols. The clip, originally posted on Facebook by Tristan Carpio, shows one of the men dancing on the roof while the others hang onto the side of the traditional public vehicle.
On September 9, Majesty Driving School reposted the footage, accompanied by the message, "Kulang na po ba tayo sa kapulisan ngayon?" (Are we now lacking in police presence?). The post drew thousands of reactions, shares, and comments from concerned netizens.
Several commenters expressed disapproval of the dangerous stunt. One user remarked, "[Lakas] tama..." while another said, "Panis! Lakas tama," emphasizing the recklessness involved. Others highlighted the potential consequences, with one warning, "Delikado 'yang gawa niyo" (That action is dangerous), and another pointing out the recurring issue faced by drivers, "Kasalanan na naman ng driver pag nahulog, sasabihin kawawa ang anak nila" (It becomes the driver’s fault if someone falls; they will say it was due to poor circumstances).
The discussion also extended to the question of police presence, with mixed opinions shared. One commenter noted, "Hindi kulang sa pulis. Kulang sa kusa" (It’s not a lack of police but a lack of initiative), while another argued, "Hindi kulang sa pulis, kulang lng sa katinuan" (It’s not insufficient police, just a lack of common sense).
In Metro Manila, it is a familiar sight to see "sabits," or passengers who hang onto the outside of jeepneys without paying fares, often comprising street children or casual riders. Although this practice is common, it remains dangerous and is prohibited under an ordinance passed by the City of Manila. The regulation aims to mitigate accidents involving such behavior on jeepneys and other public transport vehicles.
Manila Councilor Martin Isidro Jr., the principal author of the ordinance, has emphasized that the policy’s priority is the safety and security of passengers, especially students, in a highly urbanized environment. He stated, "Hindi magandang tingnan, lalo na sa highly-urbanized city... 'yun po talaga ang aming concern, 'yung safety and security of the passengers. Especially, the students."
