Speaker Dy Pledges Transparency and Accountability Amid Flood Control Scandal

Newly installed House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III has pledged to rebuild public trust in the legislative body by implementing budget reforms, enhancing transparency, and enforcing accountability, especially following the flood control scandal implicating some House members.

In his inaugural address, delivered moments after taking his oath of office, Speaker Dy emphasized his firm stance against corruption, stating, "I will not defend the guilty. I will not shield the corrupt."

Addressing his fellow legislators, he affirmed, "Our duty is not to protect each other. Our duty is to protect the Filipino people. This House will undergo change under my leadership."

Echoing the President's call for accountability, Dy declared, "No rank, no ally, no office will be exempt from responsibility. We must strengthen the oversight committee and fully cooperate with the Independent Commission of Infrastructure."

Chosen by 253 members to succeed Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez following his resignation, Dy highlighted the importance of fair and open investigations into all allegations of misconduct.

He said, "If anyone deserves to be held accountable for the swirling accusations, we will ensure that hearings are conducted fairly. We will be transparent and accountable in our actions. We will listen to the appeals of the people. We will listen to your voices. This is the only way truth will emerge, and we can begin to dispel the doubts of our fellow citizens."

Speaker Dy also called on lawmakers to pursue reforms that align the national budget with the genuine needs of the Filipino people.

He stated, "With your support, we will ensure that every cent allocated to each department corresponds to the needs of our people. Let us work together to pass a proper and clean budget focused on programs that serve the nation."

Highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance openness, Dy confirmed that measures have been taken to make the budget process more accessible and promising further improvements.

"Steps have already been taken to make the budget approval process more transparent, and we will intensify these efforts. I am ready to listen to various perspectives to deepen my understanding. My hand is open to collaborate with anyone for the sake of our country," he emphasized.

He concluded by underscoring inclusivity, saying, "Since the beginning until now, I choose no colors. Everyone matters. Everyone has something to contribute to fulfilling our mandate as representatives of our people."
