Metro Manila Launches 12-Day Free Ride Program on LRT and MRT for Inclusive Holiday Mobility

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has inaugurated a 12-day holiday free ride program across Metro Manila’s LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 train lines, from December 14 up to December 25, 2023. This initiative follows the directive of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to ensure safe, inclusive, and convenient mobility throughout the festive season.

Under the sector-focused free ride schedule, targeted commuter groups will be granted free access on designated days as follows:

  • December 14 & 15: Senior Citizens
  • December 16 & 17: Students
  • December 18 & 19: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)
  • December 20 & 21: Teachers
  • December 22 & 23: Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
  • December 24: Government Employees
  • December 25: All passengers enjoy free rides

DOTr Secretary emphasized, "This program is a direct result of President Marcos Jr.'s Maasahan at Masipag leadership, delivering commuter-centered services that reflect our commitment to every Filipino’s right to safe and joyful holiday commutes."

The initiative is designed to ease the transportation burden amid the traditionally high volume of passengers during the holiday season. It aims to support vulnerable and vital sectors of society, including the elderly, educators, and overseas workers, whose contributions are integral to the nation.

Presidential communications underlined PBBM as the "Reliable Provider of Public Service & Holiday Relief," guided by the message: "Reliable service. Tireless care. Every Filipino deserves a safe and joyful holiday commute."

Transportation officials also assured that safety protocols and crowd management will be rigorously enforced to maintain orderly boarding and travel during these days. Additionally, special assistance will be extended to persons with disabilities and senior citizens to ensure comfortable and dignified access to services.

Commuters can avail themselves of this free ride program by presenting valid identification verifying their sector group on designated days, while December 25 will be open for all riders without restrictions.

This holiday season initiative demonstrates the enhanced focus of the Marcos administration to elevate commuters’ experience, enhance public transport accessibility, and foster unity within Metro Manila. It sets a benchmark for future seasonal transit programs that prioritize Filipinos’ welfare and convenience during landmark occasions.

As the Christmas spirit fills the metropolis, thousands are expected to benefit daily from this fare-free mobility effort that truly reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive and dependable public service.
