Bullet Shell-Shaped Bottle Opener Seized at NAIA Terminal 1 Security Checkpoint
Security personnel from the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) intercepted a bottle opener fashioned to resemble a bullet shell during a routine screening at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 on November 26, 2025.
According to the OTS, the object was discovered by X-ray operator SSO Arriane Alarcon, who noticed a suspicious image suggestive of ammunition while scanning carry-on items of a passenger preparing to board Saudia Flight SV 861 bound for Riyadh. She promptly alerted baggage inspector SSO Jessiel Ruiz, who then manually inspected the luggage in the presence of the traveler — identified only as an airline representative — and members of the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP).
The in-person examination confirmed the item to be a single empty bullet shell repurposed into a bottle opener. Authorities confiscated the object and handed it over to the PNP AVSEGROUP for appropriate disposal. Following the confiscation, the passenger was allowed to continue with their travel plans without further interruption.
In a statement, OTS Administrator Undersecretary Gilberto DC Cruz urged the public to be vigilant when packing their belongings to avoid carrying items that could delay the security screening process. He emphasized, "We remind our compatriots to always check your bags before packing, and before traveling, to ensure that they are free of any security prohibited items that may cause inconvenience when you pass through our security screening checkpoint."
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to maintain airport security and ensure safe and efficient screening procedures for all travelers.
