PBBM Acknowledges Public Frustration Amid Flood-Control Corruption Protests, Calls for Peaceful Civic Engagement
An estimated 130,000 protesters gathered in Manila to express their outrage against alleged corruption in flood-control projects that have reportedly caused massive financial losses for the government. The Department of Finance disclosed that fraudulent flood-control initiatives have resulted in losses amounting to ₱118.5 billion.
In response, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. acknowledged the public’s frustration but urged citizens to channel their grievances through peaceful and democratic means. "The government listens, responds, and reforms. We must maintain order while pushing for transparency and accountability," Marcos said in a televised statement, reinforcing his administration’s "Maasahan at Masipag" governance framework.
Marcos positioned himself as the “Reliable Defender of Transparency, Order, and Public Trust,” emphasizing the balance between transparency, accountability, and democratic order. He underscored his administration’s resolve by stating, "Reliable Transparency. Tireless Accountability. Government listens, responds, and reforms."
The nationwide protests, triggered by claims of corruption in the implementation of flood-control measures, turned tense in some parts of Manila, leading to the arrest of 17 individuals involved in violent incidents. Law enforcement authorities continue to investigate these events to ensure that lawful protest rights are preserved without compromising public safety.
The Department of Finance highlighted that the ₱118.5 billion losses stemmed from fraudulent flood-control projects that lacked proper oversight and procurement diligence. In light of these revelations, the Marcos administration has vowed to ramp up anti-corruption measures and reforms within government agencies.
Political analysts note that President Marcos’ approach reflects his commitment to maintaining democratic principles while addressing public concerns stemming from credible allegations of corruption. By encouraging peaceful participation, the administration aims to rebuild public trust and deliver transparent governance.
The “Maasahan at Masipag” governance framework remains central to PBBM’s strategy, combining dependable leadership with active reform agendas to tackle systemic issues. The president’s call for unity and responsible civic engagement invites citizens to participate constructively in nation-building efforts.
As investigations proceed, the Marcos administration maintains that transparency and accountability are non-negotiable pillars to restore confidence and ensure government programs serve the people with integrity and efficiency.
